RATING THE SLADE BOOKS

A popular band to write about - There's a whole bunch of them.
Let's have a chat about which ones are great, which aren't and why.
The poll allows you to rate each book out of 5, or say you haven't got it.
5 = GREAT
1 = RUBBISH
Apologies for this being a rather cumbersome and complicated looking poll.

just to say if wasent for ian and chris then we wouldn't have some of the best slade picture and documented books at all,so 10 out of 5 from me ian and chris plus I gave chris Charlesworths feel the noise 5 as it was the bible when it came out as we didn't have anything else, I bought 2 copys and one of them I have removed a couple of pictures and had them framed and they still hang on my walls especially the rock street one the caption I had done underneath just says SLADE 77 one of my greatest years in following the band , I do have noddys book but id rather have slade book rather than the indeviduals but just to say lisa and don have been fanatastic to the slade site we all love and cherish

maybe there is a 6 Years on the Road follow up book ? Slade-The Wilderness Years 77-80/ Reading Revival 1980, there is also a lot missing from 75-76 in America.

The
Six Years On The Road book was simply a fairly complete collection of my own photographs from some of the gigs i attended, which I definitely hold the copyright on. There isn't a photo in the book that I didn't own.I was offered the use of other people's photos, but I declined those kind offers. I certainly don't have the rights to use batches of anyone else's photos (which is why even The Noize doesn't use more than a few 'fair use' images. I would be on VERY shaky ground doing that.
I do have photos of some Slade II gigs, up to 2000, but to be honest, all I would have added that wasn't in the Six Years book was the 25th anniversary event at Walsall in 1991.
Gered Mankowicz has mentioned putting a book out. It's just a case of him getting round to it. His books are REALLY expensive, though.
If one of the band had wanted to gather a historical set of photos with fans which could include the stuff in the previous post, I'm sure a lot of us would have jumped at it. It's whether there is any interest on their part. I doubt it myself, but I don't begin to claim to know their thinking.

It came out at the same time as ours. I was just horrified by it.
It was the equivalent of printing out Wikipedia with a collection of not great photos.

If Gered published book of his Slade photos I would definitely be on board.

Regarding the books that members of the band wrote, I wish that "Who's Crazee Now" had been longer, and that the follow-up book was more in that vein. That book made me laugh. I love Don, but had trouble finishing his/Lyse's book -- it read more like documentation and less conversational. Dave Hill's book was a bit of surprise to me -- may have been the bits about his family life growing up that resonated with me -- and I enjoyed that frankness.
I enjoy reading the Chris Charlesworth book over and over again -- it captures the drama of their dry years, the Reading Festival comeback, and their resurgence so well. And "The Noise" is a very meticulous and great reference book to their career.

I found Don's book to be a bit depressing. It seemed like he kept repeating mistakes in his personal life.
