A Glittering Career In Music
I've muttered to myself about releasing an album of my own songs for quite some time now. ElasticStage make it reasonably simple to do, so I compiled some songs that I had recorded in my home studio to release as an album. It is available here. Elasticstage (who manufacture the LPs and CDs) deal with all of the royalty distribution issues, which meant that I could put a few cover versions on the album. Dealing with all the royalty side of things used to be an absolute minefield - a total pain, but it's great that they take that weight off the artist's backs.

The songs:
Just A Pub Rock Band
Written by Ian with Graham Fielden for The Three. This captures pretty much what it's like being in a pub band. It can be hard work and sometimes it feels like being trapped in a bad marriage. But it can be great fun. For some inexplicable reason, this song didn't make it onto our album. It was far better than a couple of the songs that were on there and so it really should have been included. We were hampered by some awkward resistance to touching original material and maybe we should have recorded the whole album with just Graham and myself. We had trouble playing most of the songs live as a result. Hence the album sold very badly.
She Lives For The Weekend
A song about my late first wife Julie's travels to her job on the 6.36 train every morning.
The lyrics were expanded to take in dreams of fictional holidays to the Isle Of Man. Who's Got Your Attention?
The first song I ever presented to a band for playing..... Many years ago!!!
It was a fairly nice piece of writing and this is a very recent version.
There's A Hole In My Soul
Written and recorded a few years ago. A decent little rock song.
Better Than No Love At All
Written with Graham Fielden for The Three. A different version of the song made it onto the band's album.
This version was considered a little too fast.
Take The Money And Run
Written with Graham Fielden for The Three.
This one got played live a few times. It was written after the band's album was finished.
Another take exists with more guitars on it.
Son Of My Father
Yes, this is the 70's hit from Chicory Tip.
I re-imagined this as if it was Status Quo playing it. Recording the difficult keyboard solos was fun.
Change
A Sparks song. Included on the album because I love the song and I feel I did a good version of it.
The Most Hated Man In The World
It is pretty obvious who this is about.
The CD version has two bonus tracks:
Coz I Luv You
In 1991 I recorded a radically different version of the Slade song to help celebrate Slade's 25th anniversary and released it as a 7" 45 on my own Toys In The Attic label. Here it is again for those who missed it or those who don't have a record player anymore.
I Hate Christmas (the demo)
This only exists on a 7" promo 45, so I thought it would be nice to add it to the album.
