I've given Lise's biog of Don a 9.

Aside from being an excellent read with a strong narrative, it felt like Lise wasn't "pulling any punches" in regard to Don's life both within and outside of Slade, and thanks to Don's diaries and her interviews with him, the reader gains a real insight into the life of D.G. Powell.

It's also apparent from the book that Don is highly respected as a musician by so many of his peers, and also regarded as a really decent, honest bloke to boot. I found many of the comments of his step-children just plain touching and as I closed the book for the final time I felt pleased for Don that he has managed to work his way into such a great place at this time in his life, and I wish him all the very best for the years that lay ahead.

I sincerely congratulate the author on an excellent biography.

Despite a lifetime on my part admiring Don's work with my all time favourite group, I only now realise that I really didn't know anything much about him at all. So much of Nod's life has been an open book - at least in regard to what he's wanted to put "out there" over the years.

As has Dave whose many interviews I've read and heard has given me an insight into what he's all about (which is basically about himself). Even Jim, I reckon I knew a bit about; taking himself probably a little too seriously as a songwriter (although in all fairness that could have come about as his method of countering the OTT personas of Dave and Nod).

Don though, doesn't seem to have a mean bone in his body. Even when he speaks of the financial hardship in the months after Dave's stroke in 2010/2011, and how he and the other current members sugested to Dave that they carry on in the short term without him, but Dave apparently not having a bar of that. Speaks volumes about Dave.

If I had to choose the top biography about Slade, it would be this book. CC´s Feel the noize was a very comprehensive book in terms of dates and places etc. But Look wot I dun have given me a lot more insight to Slade as a band. Not just Dons peronality but also the others personalities. I personally like the chapters about the "lean years" because those
years have only been described briefly before. But then again, who wants to talk about hard times if you can talk about good times? It´s very difficult to talk about peronal failures, I think we all feel that. That´s why I´m so impressed with Don´shonesty.

There are a few incidents that I suspect are incorrect in terms of who was really there when it happened. But we´re talking about things that happened over 30 years ago and probably in a drunkstated mind. Even though I´ve read the book twice now, I still pick it up and read bits and peices from it, just because there are so many things that havent been told before. I find it very interesting to read about the recording sessions in the ´late 70´s and early 80´s. Biographies dont usually contain "boring" bits like that. What also has never been revealed before is peoples opinions about Chas.
I was always under the impression that everybody more or less adored him( or were scared of him) up to the point when the guys fired him.

Even though Don doesnt say so much about the other guys in Slade, I seem to have changed my opinion about Jimmy a little for instance. Most comments about him on the internet are not so flattering, but in Dons book most people seem to like him a lot. Dave is hardly mentioned at all(probably because they´re still working together)

As someone else here mentioned, I wonder how the sales figures have turned out? I have tried to persuade my friends
to read it but they´re not interested. I think it´s because it´s Don Powell(who?). I didnt have any problems persuading my friends to read Nod´s biography when it came out. It´s probably beause everybody knows who he is. It´s a shame really because Dons book is so much more interesting.
