Re: THE NOIZE - A NEW SLADE BOOK (topics merged)
I have just seen the review in an advance copy of Shindig #89. Quietly pleased.
Three of the band now have the book.
I don't have Nod's actual postal address, but no doubt, an opportunity to pass him a copy will arise soon enough.

We have created a page for THE NOIZE at https://www.facebook.com/The-Noize-The- ... 084595869/
The main website also has a page at http://www.slayed.co.uk

Re: THE NOIZE - A NEW SLADE BOOK (topics merged)
I got a surprise bonus at work today, & couldn't think of a better thing to splurge on. Ordered!
Re: THE NOIZE - A NEW SLADE BOOK (topics merged)
I'd just like to thank everybody who has bought the book, on behalf of Chris and myself.
Funny to think that we only announced the project last September and that we got through it so quickly.
My volume of all my collected live Slade photographs will hopefully appear in October.
The book will follow the same format as THE NOIZE.
Lots to do... I have started work on it. Chris is helping me out with some gig adverts.

Ian, The Noize has received a five star review by Daryl Easlea in the August issue of Record Collector. Excellent work, hopefully it will generate more sales.
Re: THE NOIZE - A NEW SLADE BOOK (topics merged)
Good to know that. Ta.
Especially seeing as he is doing the new Slade book for Omnibus.
I have spoken to Daryl before now. Messaged him the other day, actually...

Daryl Easlea's review in Record Collector as follows -
5 stars.
Wot they dun is simply Crazee.
As niche as you'd want it to be, The Noize - a forensic examination of Slade's career - is quite superb. Of course, it is written with a fan's zeal, and both Edmundson and Selby - two of the country's leading Slade collectors and aficionados - acknowledge this in their intro.
The Noize is impeccably researched from the first Vendors acetate in 1964 to JIm Lea's latest solo offering in 2018. It is detail-heavy, offering exactly what one would expect. To call it a mere discography is akin to calling Grand Central a railway station. It's the result of interviews with the band, an unrivalled access to sources, and a wander down many byways, with pictures of labels, adverts, fanzines and pressings. It is wholly possible to become completely lost in the Slade maze. It even namechecks the book this writer is currently crafting on the band (I'd better get a move on) but what I do know is that myself and any future Slade writers now have somewhere rock solid to check their facts.
Writing with soul and passion, Edmundson and Selby are, however, unafraid of the truth - even they find it difficult to find kind words to say about 1979's cover of Okey Cokey. An absolute treat.

Quietly chuffed. Thanks for very much indeed for posting that.
We have had some (unquotable) positive feedback from Don and the Lea camp, a thank you from Dave Hill.
Nod will have received his copy by now, but the lines of communication are not strightforward, so while I'd love to just get a thumbs up or even some comments, I just hope he likes it and thinks that it is a decent book that does them and their career justice.

Re: THE NOIZE - A NEW SLADE BOOK (topics merged)
You would think though that it is rather easy for Nod's wife to write on twitter that her husband is very enthusiastic and proud about it.....
Re: THE NOIZE - A NEW SLADE BOOK (topics merged)
Thinking out loud:
While it would be very nice indeed to hear something / anything back from deepest Cheshire, Suzan's Twitter account is for her own personal use and she does not use it to be Nod's mouthpiece or spokesperson, so I don't really expect that kind of special treatment.
It is said that Nod is not involved in the Daryl Easlea book at all. Maybe after writing his own two books, he is quite rightly tired of talking about the band he left going on for 30 years ago, unless he has to promote a product. He is perfectly entitled to keep himself to himself. We did initially consider asking to interview the band members for the book, but decided against it. We could fully narrate the book with band comments from the time and whatever I could slip into the Q&A's with Don and Jim.
We recently ran the competition to have a beer or two with Jim Lea. This will obviously involve lots of questions about the past. Jim is up for that, but Nod might not be inclined to go over it all again for the zillionth time. He had years and years of doing that. I met him at Piccadilly Radio in 1991 when I put out the Go Crazy 'Coz I luv you' single and he cheerfully answered every question I fired at him and even brewed up. Years have passed since then. He's now entitled to some peace and quiet. Being a fan and hopefully a reasonably considerate one, I have always let him have that peace and quiet. Privacy is a superb thing.
Also, this book is not Nod's product. While I have tried my damnedest at every stage of editing it, to put nothing at all in the book that he would object to, there are naturally opinions on various records that he has released that may differ from his own. We have written about his career and he will have a unique view on that and see it like nobody else. It's HIS LIFE. Though every quote about a record (etc) from Nod that we used is from an interview, he may feel differently now about anything / everything.
It's not an official book - if it was, loads of text may even have been cut (as has happened to certain other books) because of editing by the powers that be - that's one of the perils of getting approval.
The ideal situation would be to do the occasional Q&A by email for any future revised edition with band members, but that is not a given... We have Jim and Don who will do a Q&A. Nod and Dave may not be at all interested in that and that's entirely up to them.
I didn't want to put out 'The Slade Annual' at half the size and have people laugh at it.
I wanted our book to be what it is and for it to be out there.
Approval would possibly have cut it in half and you might still be waiting for it.
While Chris and I are (hopefully rightly) proud of the book, we don't necessarily need rounds of applause from the band, as we primarily did it so we had copies.
Anyone else buying it after that (and they still are, amazingly) is a real bonus.
Sorry if that reads in any way like a lecture, which is not my intention - I'm just trying to answer all points that have come from various places and think out loud a little.

Ian you and Chris wrote a book with you 2 and all us are extremely proud of its a fantastic discography and informative insight into are favourite band reviews are brill which they should be as I don't think any one else could have done any better or came close to the book you and Chris wrote and I'm sure Mr holder will go through it and think the same and hopefully through your connections he acknowledges you and Chris as it doesn't get any better

Re: THE NOIZE - A NEW SLADE BOOK (topics merged)
Further to thinking out loud:
Radio silence from Dave Hill. Not unexpected.
Radio silence from Holder Towers. Not unexpected.
Approaches made to Jim Lea HQ regarding expanded content.
Don seems willing to answer questions when they are sent to him.
I am starting work now on a massive discography book on The Who and their solo careers and the whole Slade thing is going to go on the back burner over the next year, as writing it is going to be a massive (and rather daunting) undertaking.
I have a lot going on over the next year or so.
* 2019 - 2020: Live work with The Three - see www.the3.co.uk for schedule.
* January / February 2020: Record ten songs for a solo release.
* Sept 2019 - June 2020: Two photography courses.
* For Oct 19th: THE NOIZE limited edition numbered and signed convention edition with expanded content. Number to be printed will be based on advance orders: In progress.
* Sept 2019 - April 2020: Further Slade project work?
* SLADE SIX YEARS ON THE ROAD - complete collection photo book: Compilation during Sept and Oct for maybe a limited release Dec 2019.

It came up on Facebook today as being the first anniversary of my ordering the original proof copies of THE NOIZE. This is the point where everything became very real.
Quite a number of changes were made to the text and the layout of the book before release.
The colours were absolutely great in the proofs, but the first batch of books had some Polydor labels that were TOO red to be able to read the text. I had to re-do the colour balance in every red label image and then reinsert them into the document and then prepare it for publishing on Amazon, including converting to pdf and uploading. It took a whole day. I fretted the whole time.

Ian its probably like the Boyz in the early 70s they released material and hopefully and preyed it would be a hit and like you when the book was released you hoped it would be a success and believe me it was not only with slade fans but the book critics who paid homage to you for a brilliant production and hopefully not don and Jim bit the other 2 ,your work knowledge and contribution is invaluable to us all.

Re: THE NOIZE - A NEW SLADE BOOK (topics merged)
Alan. Nod commented on our book in the interview video and Don has been very enthusiastic about it.
Dave has had a copy sent to him at home, as has Jim Lea. Dave hasn't said anything to us , but people have spoken to him and he's said he's got the book and he liked it. That was passed back to us, but we can't go round repeating second-hand quotes really, so we don't ever go any further than to say that.
We sent the (just about complete) 1973 chapter, as a representative sample of the book, through our usual contact point, to Jim Lea for any comments and for some sort of approval. It didn't reach Jim. It wasn't passed on to him. We tried and failed to get some sort of approval through our usual route.
If we get to speak to Jim, we will nervously ask the question of what he thinks of the book (just as we would with Dave).
We are fully aware that the book is unauthorised and - as Nod said in the interview - the accuracy regarding what people said or thought is very different between the four members of the band. Nod is very wary of being misquoted, having probably suffered it for years.
I felt I had to amend the back cover of the book on Amazon immediately after Nod said that he was annoyed by the statement that three of the band didn't want to record the Christmas song. It was what Jim said, but they have different opinions on some things. It was an eye-opener for me. Nod was absolutely right. He has a different view to Jim. Just as i would hate it of someone misquoted me, i didn't want to put words in Nod's mouth.
Any second edition of the book will be careful to avoid any such recurrence. But it will contain quotes.

Thanks for that link Goyer. Excellent, and well deserved, review by Ken Sharp. Nod interview pretty good as well.
Re: THE NOIZE - A NEW SLADE BOOK (topics merged)
Going back a couple of posts...
What I found really disappointing was that I sent the (fairly complete at the time) 1973 chapter via 'a friend' to Jim Lea for his approval.
The 'friend' made some slightly catty comments that Jim wouldn't like it as it was an unofficial book.
We waited and we heard nothing back, but continued to slog away at the book, regardless.
We are used to silence from JWL.
A while later, the book came out and we sent copies to the group.
It came back to us, via the same friend, that Jim was 'furious' about the book.
My heart sank, but it was done now. The last thing we had wanted to do was upset any of the band.
We wouldn't have done it if we had thought that would be the case.
The 'friend's own initial response to it was very guarded, though he later came out as being in favour of it.
I said that Jim had been given the chance of approval and commenting and I asked what he didn't like?
The sample chapter hadn't even been passed on.
The 'friend' said that he didn't think it would actually happen, so he wasn't going to bother Jim with it.
He made a decision that affected everything, based on his own feelings about the book.
That's not how business works. It was just one part of a fall-out with this 'friend'.
Word later reached us, via a FAR more reliable source, that Jim was actually very pleased with the book.
He also slagged the 'The Hitz' compilation all over Facebook... until Don sent him a copy.
It happens.

Re: THE NOIZE - A NEW SLADE BOOK (topics merged)
Greetings Mugwumps; I love SLADE even though they were always a bit thick, and if you read "THE NOIZE" you will get an idea of what I mean. Their best songs were relegated to the "B" side, (e.g. "MAN WHO SPEEKS EVIL"), or album tracks, (e.g. "LOVE IS LIKE A ROCK"). SLADE's misfires were down to their own stupidity and obssession with limpness; e.g. "IN FOR A PENNY", "STILL THE SAME", "UNIVERSE" etc. In "THE NOIZE" every cut, promo, hit or miss is chronicled with amazing and loving attention to detail . . a truly superb, wonderful tome that every SLADE advocate should, and MUST own. Get it now! D'ya get the idea that I love this book? SKELLY.
